Exploring Morocco: Transportation Tips and Tricks

Depending on where you’re staying in Morocco, there are various ways to travel across the country. Whether you choose to take a taxi, bus, train, or bicycle, you’ll find it easy to explore all the incredible sights Morocco has to offer.
At the airport, you can opt for shuttle buses, taxis, or contact a car rental agency for transportation.

Travel all across the country

High-speed train

In addition to the traditional train services, you can opt for the High-Speed Train (TGV), which currently connects four stations: Tangier, Kenitra, Rabat, and Casablanca. The journey from Tangier to Casablanca takes just 2 hours and 10 minutes, while Rabat to Tangier is completed in 1 hour and 20 minutes. If you’re traveling from Kenitra to Tangier, the trip is only 50 minutes long. Tickets can be purchased either at the station or through the ONCF website.

Train

The Moroccan National Railways (ONCF) boasts the second-largest rail network in Africa, covering a significant portion of Morocco. It connects major cities, including Marrakech and Oujda, but does not extend to Agadir, Nador, and some smaller towns. To avoid potential crowds and frustration, it’s advisable to book your journey in advance and purchase your ticket through the ONCF website.

Coach tour

Traveling by coach is a delightful way to explore Morocco while enjoying the stunning views of its cities. Several private companies provide comfortable services to ensure an enjoyable journey. Coaches can pick you up from the train station and even reach the most remote villages. You can check timetables, fares, and purchase your tickets online.

Rental Cars

Renting a car can be an excellent option for enjoying your stay in Morocco at your own pace. Before you travel, consider booking a car in advance through various travel agency platforms that provide a wide selection of vehicles to suit your needs.

Getting Around the City

Tramway

As a key component of Morocco’s transportation network, the tramway is the preferred mode of transport in the cities of Rabat, Salé, and Casablanca. Two lines currently connect Salé to Rabat. In Casablanca, there are two existing lines, with two additional lines set to launch soon.

Taxi

Taking a cab is a common practice in Moroccan cities. Taxis are easily identifiable by their colors: red for Casablanca and Agadir, blue for Rabat, Tangier, and Asilah, and orange for Marrakech. If you have a late-night arrival or need to catch a flight, you can book a cab in advance using the “on-demand taxi” service or the “green taxi” option, available wherever you are.

Bus & Tourist train

The sightseeing bus is a fun way to explore Marrakech and Tangier, allowing you to discover the cities up close. You can plan your trip in advance and purchase tickets online for City Tour Tanger and City Tour Marrakech. In Agadir and Ifrane, another popular mode of tourist transport is the small tourist train, which offers pleasant strolls and lets you enjoy the beauty of these cities.

Carriage ride

For short walks, a carriage ride allows you to navigate the maze of winding alleys at the heart of the cities. It’s the perfect way to explore the medinas and souks more freely. You can also wander through the medina on foot, soaking up the unique atmosphere of each city.

Rental motorcycles & bicycles

In Marrakesh, you can rent bikes, scooters, and motorbikes on-site. Cycling around the city allows you to uncover hidden treasures while immersing yourself in the intricacies of the local urban culture.
